Drive Safe

Aggressive driving wastes gas. Jackrabbit starts and hard braking all waste gas and curb mileage by as much as 33% at highway speeds, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Slow Down Leadfoot!

Speeding wastes gas and your money. Each mile per hour you drive over 60 mph is like paying an extra 10 cents per gallon, DOE says.

Drive the More Efficient Vehicle

If you own more than one vehicle, drive the one that gets better gas mileage whenever possible.

Combine Your Errands Into One Trip

Plan your route so that it will allow you to go to work, pick up the kids at school, drop off your dry cleaning, grab a takeout dinner, and vacation in Yosemite all without ever leaving the car. Now that's efficient!

Use Carpooling/Public Transit/Non-Motorized Options

Ride the bus, carpool, bicycle or walk instead of driving alone. Sharing a ride to work with a friend or two effectively doubles your fuel economy for the trip and allows you to use the diamond lane.

Take Advantage of Telecommuting

Many employers offer telecommuting as an option. Use the computer and telephone to replace vehicle trips for business, shopping and services when possible.

Purchase a Fuel Efficient Vehicle

When purchasing, consider the most fuel efficient vehicle and save up to 50%. Consider a hybrid-electric, a diesel vehicle, or even a motorcycle. The next best option is to purchase the most fuel efficient vehicle within the class of vehicles you are considering.

Buy Smart

Today's gasolines provide very similar engine performance, although some brands have different gasoline blends that provide other benefits, so choose stations in your area with the lowest prices. Fuel prices can vary 10% within a local area. Avoid filling the tank during high-price periods.

Check Vehicle Gas Caps

About 17% of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.

Make Sure Tires Are Properly Inflated

When tires aren't inflated properly, it's like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon.

Replace Spark Plugs Regularly

Spark plugs fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug can cause misfiring, which wastes fuel.

Replace Dirty Air Filters

An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture - too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10%, saving about 25 cents a gallon.

New Oxygen Sensor

A new oxygen sensor alone can improve gas mileage by as much as 15%.

Use the Right Grade of Gasoline

Most cars run fine on regular. Check your vehicle owner's manual to find out what's right for your car. Regular grade fuel costs 10% less then premium grade.

Reduce Air Conditioner Use / Close Windows

Using the air conditioner increases fuel cost 13%. If it's cool enough, use the flow-through ventilation instead of rolling down the windows.

Reduce Wind Resistance and Weight

Using a loaded roof rack increases drag and fuel consumption. Carry the load inside your vehicle if you can. Removing unnecessary weight is better still. Check your trunk!

Minimize Vehicle Idling

Today's vehicles are designed to warm up fast. Avoid idling when you can; idling is 0 miles per gallon.
